There is an issue going around the Internet and people need to know, once and for all, what is the difference between eye serums and eye creams?
There is a simple answer to this question: nothing.
If you go by the dictionary, these are the meanings of each tertiary word:
Serum: the clear, pale-yellow liquid that separates from the clot in the coagulation of blood; blood serum.
Cream: a soft solid or thick liquid containing medicaments or other specific ingredients, applied externally for a prophylactic, therapeutic, or cosmetic purpose.
That may not clarify things, but it gives off the meaning that in cosmetics, they are virtually the same. I have asked one product formulator, and he said there is no difference in the way people use the terms these days. There could be an argument made for viscosity differences, however they are very subtle and probably do not have much impact on the actual product.
The reason this is topic of discussion for today is that there is a lot of discussion among people who are looking for an eye cream, who end up stumbling into an eye serum. Serum is a word created for this industry by cunning marketing heads that want to get a technical edge over their competition. If you put some thought into it, “Serum” sounds better than “Cream.” It sounds medicinal, and it sounds cutting-edge.
Keep that in mind when you buy anti aging creams. Some smart companies even make one of each, knowing that people will essentially buy whatever one they heard the latest news on. While that is perfectly fine, keep in mind as a consumer that both products are likely to product similar effects on the skin.
One interesting thing I noticed while glancing at the definitions again, was that the serum entry talked about the color yellow. Most serums I have seen do come out in a yellow form. I found that interesting. Although, eye creams do come in yellow colors as well. It’s lotions that typically have the pearl-white traits.
Regardless of which one you use for your anti aging or skin moisturizing routine, it’s important to know what ingredients make a good under-eye facial cream. Here is a list of well researched ingredients we know work. Look for them in while you research eye serums and eye creams.
The berry ingredients of course come to the formula with their antioxidant properties, making them a valuable part of the formula. Antioxidants need no introduction, and should be consumed whenever possible in the diet and in skin care products. If you turn on your television, you will hear Oprah, Dr. Phil, and many other media moguls talking about antioxidants. Of course, if you want to hear even more about them, just pick up a health or wellness journal on your way out of the supermarket next time and you will be bombarded with information about them.
Knowing your ingredients is half the battle, but now that you know what to look for, you can find them in your favorite eye serum or anti aging eye cream.
